Roughwheelers
Unauthorized Shaver Lake Vacation
August 11th through August 19th, 2001
Itinerary

Saturday, August 11th:
  • Drop off is Gorman at 8:00am, get gas and food first.
  • Lunch is along the way as needed.
  • Arrive Shaver Lake, Dorabelle Campground approx 2:30pm.
  • Unpack and relax the rest of the afternoon, take a swim in Shaver Lake.
Sunday, August 12th:
  • ½ day trip to Bald Mtn Lookout (Class B with a couple of real hard spots). Also lots of play spots.
  • Arizona Contingent arrives around noon.
Monday, August 13th:
  • Spanish Route (Class C). 1 hour pavement drive to the trail head. Spanish Route is 4.5 miles long and is a dead end, so it’s 9 miles round trip.
  • If we have time, we can do the first part of the Dusy, up to Voyager Rock.
  • Or explore around Courtright Res.
  • Stop and see the giant sequoias at McKinley Grove
Tuesday, August 14th:
  • Gary leads the run to Town for lunch at the Burger Shack. Otherwise, nothing planned.
  • Gary also leads the run to the Icecream place that afternoon.
  • Dinner in town (which Gary will also lead the run to).
Wednesday, August 15th:
  • Day trip to Lake Edison (swimming)
  • There are 3 trails in the area:
    1. Onion Sprint Route (Class A)
    2. Bear Route (Bear Division Dam) (Class A)
    3. Hooper Route (Class A)
  • Lake Edison is a 2 hour drive from camp so air up the night before.
  • Possibly stop at Mono Hot Springs on the way home for dinner and a hot soak.
  • If we have dinner at Mono Hot Springs, it will be cold driving home, dress accordingly.
Thursday, August 16th:
Friday, August 17th:
  • Red Lake (Class B) & Coyote Lake (Class C). The trail to Coyote Lake starts at Red Lake so this is easier than it sounds.
  • As time permits, we can do the following short & easy trails that are in the same area:
    1. Mirror Lake (Class B)
    2. West Lake (Class A)
    3. Strawberry Lake (Class A).
Saturday, August 18th:
  • Arizona group leaves early morning.
  • Option Day. We can do what the group wants. Possibilities are:
    1. Swap Lake (Class C and then some!).
      • Swap Lake would be the roughest run we do and is easily as hard as the Dusy or Rubicon, just shorter. Many people take 2 days to run Swamp, but we should be ok doing in one long day. We will mark our milage and if the day runs too late, we will turn around as needed in order to avoid getting back to camp seriously late (after 9:00pm).
      • Leave time would be 8:00am from the restaurant in town. Meet in town for breakfast at 6:45am.
      • This will be a long day. Plan on arriving back to camp late, perhaps after dark.
      • Be sure to bring extra food, water, clothes, etc.
      • This trip will require a well prepared vehicle.
    2. Voyager Rock/Courtright Res, if we haven't been there already.
    3. Huntington Lake Road (no 4 wheeling). Just a scenic drive around the other side of Huntington Lake
    4. Stump Springs Road (again, no 4 wheeling).
      • Could be an extention of the Huntington Lake Road trip.
      • More scenic driving.
      • Some dirt road exploration is possible to places like Mammoth Pool Res (swimming?), Brown Cone Mtn., Mt. Tom Lookout (el 9,018!)
Sunday, August 19th:
  • Leave for home, 9:00am departure.
  • Lunch on the road as needed.
  • Arrive home approx 5:00pm.
